Getting to Know Allah’s Name “Al-Jaliil”

The deeper a servant knows his God, the more a sense of greatness grows in his heart, the more he surrenders to Him, and the smaller the world that is before him. Among the names of God that show His majesty and glory are Al-Jaliil —The Greatest and Most Glorious—which means perfect majesty, majesty and glory.

In this article, we will review three main things: the arguments that show that Al-Jaliil that is the name of God, an explanation of its meaning according to the scholars, as well as important consequences related to each servant. May Allah give us all taufik. Amen.

Proof of God’s name “Al-Jaliil”

NO Al-Jaliil it is not mentioned explicitly in the Qur’an in the form of a name, but the origin of the word (majesty) mentioned in several verses.

Allah Drug said,

And the face of your Lord remains the Owner of majesty and honor.

“And the face of your Lord whose majesty and glory remains eternal.” (QS. Ar-Rahman: 27)

And His words,

Glory be to the name of your Lord, Possessor of glory and honor.

“Glory be to the name of your Lord who has majesty and glory.” (QS. Ar-Rahman: 78)

Likewise, in the authentic Sunnah, this name is not mentioned explicitly. [1]

It’s just that there are several narrations in the hadith of Abu Hurairah May Allah bless him and grant him peace. Among them is Deep Sunan At-Tirmidhi,

Indeed, God has ninety-nine names, a hundred more than one. Whoever counts them will go to heaven. He is God, there is no god but Him, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the Most Sovereign… the Most Gracious, the Most Generous, the Most Merciful…

“Indeed, Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less than one. Whoever counts them (memorizes, understands and practices them), then he will enter heaven. (Al-Jaliil)again Most Glorious (Al-Kareem) …” (HR. At-Tirmidhi, 5: 530, considered weak by Al-Albani God bless) [2]

There are differences among scholars as to what Al-Jaliil including Al-Asmaaul Husnaa or not. Among the scholars included Al-Jaliil into the Al-Asmaul Husna are Al-Baihaqi, Ibnul ‘Arabi, Al-Khatthabi, Ibn Sa’di, and Al-Lajnah Ad-Da’imah Rahimahumullah. [3]

Meaning of God’s Name “Al-Jaliil”

To fully understand the meaning of God’s name, we first need to know the meaning of the word “Al-Jaliil” linguistically, then in context as the name of God Drug.

The linguistic meaning of “Al-Jaliil”

Say Al-Jaliil comes from the root of the word (c i i) which shows great and majestic meaning.

Ibn Faris said,

(Glory be to Allah) Al-Jīm and Al-Lam have three origins: The glory of something: His majesty, The glory of something: His greatness, and the glory of Allah: His greatness.

“The root of the word yum-lam-lam has three basic meanings:

  1. something becomes big (majestic). ‘Jull asy-shai’ means most of something. And ‘jalalullah’ means the majesty of God.
  2. something that covers or covers something else. Like ‘jull al-faras’ (covering the horse’s body), and like rain it covers the earth with water and plants.
  3. relating to sound; said ‘journal friend’ (a thunderous cloud) when it makes a sound.” [4]

In the al-Miṣbāḥ al-Munīr, Al-Fayyumiy said,

(Glory be to Allah) it is truly extraordinary

“Something was said jalla when it becomes big (amazing).” [5]

Meaning “Al-Jaliil” in the context of God

When relying on God Exalted, For Al-Jaliil shows that He is the Essence who has perfect majesty and greatness.

ِAl-Khaththabi God bless say,

The Greatest: Means greatness and majesty, and its meaning is directed at the greatness of power and the greatness of status. He is the Almighty who views every great person as small and trivial. With Him all things are great

“Al-Jaliil is a Being that has greatness and majesty. The meaning goes back to the greatness of His power and the majesty of His position. He is the one before whom everything great becomes small and everything great becomes small.” [6]

Sheikh Abdurrahman bin Nashir As-Sa’di God bless said,

The Greatest, the Greatest, the Greatest, the Greatest. He is depicted with the attributes of glory, pride, majesty, and majesty. He is greater than all, greater than all, exalted, and supreme.

Al-Majid, Al-Kabir, Al-‘Azhiim, Al-Jalil are names that show the qualities of glory, greatness and majesty. He is greater than all things, greater than all things, and higher than all things.” [7]

Consequences of the name of Allah “Al-Jaliil” for servants

Name assignment “Al-Jaliil” for God Drug has many consequences, both in terms of the nature and preaching of Allah, as well as from the servant’s side. Here are some of the consequences from the servant’s side:

Believe and affirm this name for God

There has been a discussion about the evidence from the Koran and hadith, regarding the determination of God’s name Al-Jaliil as part of Al-Asmaaul Husnaa, where there is conflicting opinion on this matter. For those who consider these arguments to be strong, the consequence is to determine a name Al-Jaliil for God Drug. [8]

Determining the nature of glory for God

A servant should believe that Allah has characteristics Jalal (majesty) and has the right to be characterized by that attribute, as indicated in His words,

Possessor of majesty and honor

“Who has greatness and glory.” (QS. Ar-Rahman: 27)

Ibn Kathir God bless said,

Meaning: He is worthy of respect and not being disobeyed, and worthy of being obeyed and not disobeyed.

Meaning: He is the One who deserves to be glorified, so that he cannot be disobeyed, and worthy of being obeyed so that he cannot be denied. [9]

Be polite in using this name

NO Al-Jaliil including names that indicate perfection of character. Therefore:

  • not used for anyone other than Allah in his form ma’rifah (with “Al”);
  • as for without “Al” (such as “Jalil”), then it is permissible if only as a name without the intention of a perfect description.

Apart from that, the use of Abdul Jalil’s name is permitted, good for those considering it Al Jalil as part of Al-Asmaaul Husna, or not. [10]

In addition, among the consequences of knowing the name Al-Jaliil namely: being solemn in worship, surrendering in obedience, feeling small before God; as mentioned in Tafsir Ibn Kathir on. Wallahu nature.

May Allah make us among His servants who glorify Him with true majesty, surrender to Him, and live in the shadow of His majesty. Amen.
