Sentencing Suicide Perpetrators to Eternity in Hell

QUESTION:

Assalamu’alaikum…Ustadz Afwan, permission to ask, there was a case of someone dying/died because of hanging himself…then there was one resident who was so annoyed and didn’t like it, he said “He will forever be in Hell”. The question is, can we say it like that? (+62 878-1243-xxxx)

ANSWER

Wa’alaikumussalam warahmatullah wabarakatuh

No, eternity in hell is only for unbelievers or apostates.

Meanwhile, people who commit suicide are still Muslims. You might go to hell first but it won’t last forever. As is possible, Allah Ta’ala forgives and Allah admits him to heaven.

During the time of Rasulullah ﷺ someone committed suicide by injuring his hand, instead Rasulullah ﷺ prayed:

God, forgive his hands

God, forgive his hands
(HR. Muslim no. 116)

Sheikh Abdullah Al Faqih explained:

If he died by suicide, then he died as a Muslim, and we hope for God’s all-encompassing mercy.

If someone dies by committing suicide then he dies in Islam, he can still hope for Allah’s mercy which is broad and covers everything.

You have to pray for it and work hard to do it. Perhaps Allah’s grace will heal him, and these verses show that the person who committed suicide was among the Muslims, and that he did not leave the Islamic religion because of his actions, and that he was under the will of Allah SWT.

So you should pray for him earnestly, may God’s grace welcome him.

The arguments show that people who commit suicide are still part of the general population of Muslims, they do not leave Islam by their actions, and (their fate) is under the will of Allah Ta’ala.
