Law on Mosques Installing QRIS from Conventional Banks

QUESTION:

Assalamualaikum, I want to ask sir, how is it legal for mosques to install Qris so that people can easily donate to mosques, but with conventional BRI.

ANSWER

Wa’alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullah

Using Qris for alms is an effort to simplify and adapt to the times. This side is fine.

Then, what about the Conventional Bank account that the mosque has?

If it is only used to receive funds, without contracts that contain usury, then the law is permissible with the following conditions:

– Mosques are not involved in ribawi transactions (such as interest-bearing deposits),

– No interest or profits from the bank are received and utilized (if any, they must be separated for non-worship matters such as repairing public toilets, etc.),

– There are no adequate Islamic banking options in the area.

Contemporary ulama allow opening an account at a ribawi bank if there are emergency conditions and needs such as receiving a salary, or just for transfers, and conditions where there is no choice.

However, saving in a sharia bank is better for the mosque. So that is more important and in accordance with sharia principles.

“And Allah has permitted buying and selling and prohibited usury.”
(QS. al-Baqarah: 275)

A mosque is a holy place, so it is more appropriate to protect its financial purity from all forms of involvement with usury, even indirectly.
