A condition that can only be plural without Qashar

QUESTION:

Assalamu’alaikum… Ustd, related to plural-qashor in safar. In Mu’tabar’s opinion, a person can only do plural (not simultaneously qashar), and kpn can do both (plural + qashar).

ANSWER

Wa’alaikumussalam warahmatullah wabarakatuh

The rule of thumb is that if the travel distance can be qashar, then the plural form can also be used for that distance.

All schools of thought agree that qashar is only permissible for traveling:

And if you attack on the face of the earth, then there is no sin for you if you shorten your prayers.

And when traveling on earth, it is not a sin to miss prayer (QS. An Nisa: 101)

But, plural for safar, does not reach the degree of agreement. In the Hanafi school of thought, there is no plural for safar. The hadiths of Rasulullah ﷺ which explain that he was plural when traveling only apply to him. Meanwhile, the majority school of thought is plural, it is permissible to travel.

How far is it? More than 20 opinions on this matter. However, what is adhered to by the majority of ulama is 4 burd (2 marhalah), around 88,656 km. Others say there is no special distance, what is important is that based on reason and tradition it is worthy of being called safar.

Regarding the question “when can only be plural without qashar when traveling”, then this is not quite right. Because, if the journey is already permissible for qashar then it is also permissible in plural, this is if the reason is because of the journey.

Just plural without qashar This happens if it is not due to traveling (because the qashar is only permissible due to traveling), such as due to heavy rain, serious illness, heavy busyness, and other masyaqqah (difficulties/shortcomings). This can only be plural without qashar.
