Knowing How the Prophet SAW and Reclined

Sitting and leaning is one of the activities that humans definitely do. Of course, each person also has their own habits of sitting and leaning. This also applies to the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. He also has a way of sitting and leaning. So how did the Prophet sit and lean?

As Muslims, of course we really love the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. One proof of our love is of course by trying to get to know him, as well as emulating and imitating him sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. In this article we will discuss how the Prophet SAW sat and also how he leaned.

the Prophet’s seat sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam

Sitting is something that humans in general usually do, the Prophet certainly did it too. One of the sitting positions carried out by the Prophet was sitting kurfusha’. This is as in the hadith narrated by Qailah bint Makhramah, she said,

Based on the history of Qayla bint Makhramah, she saw Rasulullah SAW in the mosque and he was sitting cross-legged. He said, “When I saw Rasulullah SAW, who was sitting in humility, I was very afraid of his difference.”

“Indeed, I saw the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in the mosque, he was sitting kurfusha’.He said, “When I saw the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in a state of complete devotion while sitting, I trembled because of his authority.” (HR. Abu Daud)

So what is sitting? kurfusha’? Sheikh Abdurrazaq bin Abdul Muhsin Al-Badr hafizahullah explained that sitting kurfusha’ It can be interpreted in two ways, namely:

First, Sit with your thighs together and put them on your stomach and hug your knees with your hands.

Second, Sit with your knees propped together as if you were sitting Tasyahhud, then put his stomach on his thighs, and put his hands under his armpits.

There is another hadith that shows how the Prophet SAW sat when he was in the mosque. From Abu Said Al-Khudri May god bless you, he says,

Every time the Prophet sat in the mosque, he would cover himself with his hands

“When the Messenger of Allah was sitting in the mosque, he sat down in love with both hands.” (HR. Tirmidhi)

The hadith above shows that the Messenger of Allah sat down Attention’. Sit notice is someone sitting on their buttocks, then bending their stomach and legs towards their thighs, while holding their calves with their hands from the front.

Apart from sitting, he also sometimes rests while lying down when he is at the mosque. This is as in the hadith narrated by Sufyan bin Uyainah,

Sufyan bin Uyaynah told us, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, on the authority of Abbad bin Tamim, on the authority of his uncle, that he saw the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, lying in the mosque with one leg crossed over the other.

“Sufyān bin ‘Uyainah narrated from az-Zuhrī, from ‘Abbād bin Tamīm, from his uncle, that he saw the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam lie down in the mosque with one leg over the other.” (HR. Bukhari)

The actions of the Prophet as shown in this hadith are things that people in general sometimes do when resting. This is permissible if done occasionally while resting or something like that. However, you need to pay attention or make sure that your private parts are not exposed when lying down in a situation like this. This is because there is a hadith narrated in Sahih Muslim, from Jabir May Allah bless him and grant him peace that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

He forbade the entry of deaf women, and for men to raise one leg over the other when he lay on his back.

“He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam forbid isytimal aṣ-sammaa’ (a certain way of dressing that wraps the body in cloth without arm gaps), and (forbids) a man from lifting one leg over the other while he lies on his back.” (HR. Muslim)

At first glance the two hadiths above certainly seem contradictory, one hadith says he did it and the other says he forbade it. Sheikh Abdurrazaq bin Abdul Muhsin Al-Badr hafizahullah explain the compromise between the two hadiths. He says,

The hadith prohibition applies if a person feels unsafe if his private parts are exposed, such as someone wearing a hat, but if he is safe from this, such as someone wearing clothes, then there is no harm for him.

“The hadith that prohibits it applies when someone makes it possible for their private parts to be visible, such as someone who wears a sarong. However, if it is safe from exposing their private parts, like someone who uses a sirwal, then there is no problem.”

Rely on the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam

Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam He is also a human being who certainly feels tired so he needs to lean back. He sometimes leans back when sitting, which is usually a habit, and also leans when standing, which is usually because he is tired or sick or weak.

Lean back when sitting

When he sat down, he… sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam usually leaning back. This is like in a hadith, he said,

Shall I tell you about the greatest sins? Three. They answered: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Associating partners with God and disobeying your parents. He sat down and lay down and said: Except for lying. He said: He repeated it over and over until we said: If only he would keep quiet.

“Do you want me to tell you the biggest sin?” (He repeated this three times) The companions answered, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah.” He answered, “Doing shirk towards Allah, disobeying his parents.” At that time he was leaning back, then sat up straight and said, “You know, that word is a lie.” He kept repeating it, until we said, “May he be quiet.” (HR. Bukhari)

The hadith shows that he was sitting in a reclining position. So how does he lean? In another hadith narrated by Jabir bin Samuroh, he said,

I saw the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, lying on a pillow to his left.

“I saw the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was leaning on a pillow on his left side.” (HR. Tirmidhi)

The hadith above shows that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam sometimes leaning on a pillow. In the hadith above, it is stated that he leaned on the left side of his body, but he also sometimes leaned on the right side of his body. People sometimes need a sitting position like this because it can rest the body.

Even though he sits back, he doesn’t do it while eating. As in a hadith, O Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

I don’t eat while lying down

“I don’t eat while leaning.” (HR. Tirmidhi)

Lean when standing

He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also sometimes lean when standing or walking when sick. This is as in a hadith narrated by Anas bin Malik May Allah bless him and grant him peacehe said,

The Prophet complained. He came out and leaned on Osama bin Zaid, wearing Qatari clothes which he wrapped around himself, then he led them in prayer.

“Indeed, when he was sick, the Messenger of Allah came out while leaning on Usāmah bin Zaid. At that time, he was wearing a cloth qathri wrapped in a shawl, then he led them in prayer.” (HR. Tirmidhi)

His condition in the hadith above was when he was sick sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam before death. At that time his condition was so weak that he needed help to stand so he leaned on Usamah bin Zaid May Allah bless him and grant him peace.
